Lifelines: The Tools You Need to Prepare For CSA 2010 - TruckingInfo 2/10/2010
The good news is that there are technology and compliance solutions out there that are designed to help fleets analyze their safety data, identify problem areas and improve their hiring practices in preparation for CSA 2010.
Here are a few suggestions:
There's a lot of data out there when it comes to CSA 2010, so the more communication and training you have with drivers, the safer your fleet's going to be. That's where Tenstreet's Communication Engine comes in. Tenstreet, a supplier of software solutions for recruiting, hiring and retaining drivers, recently launched a new service that automates and streamlines the driver management process.
According to Tenstreet President Tim Crawford, the company wanted to develop a solution to help fleets track communication with drivers, so carriers could show responsiveness to issues related to the new safety system. "CSA 2010 is really raising the stakes," he says, particularly because under the new system, there's going to be more data that's discoverable and admissible.
The new solution includes an Accident Response capability, which assists with the necessary actions following an accident. This feature automatically enrolls drivers in specific online safety courses, schedules the training courses, notifies the driver of training dates, displays the courses online, tracks the drivers' progress, tests the driver upon completion, stores the driver's test in the drivers online document file, and notifies the safety director that the driver has completed the course. It also produces a DOT-compliant Accident Registry.
A Monthly Safety Training tool provides a system for automatically tracking and monitoring necessary training, including web-based video training and phone-based training. It tracks which drivers have completed the safety training, tests drivers and updates driver files upon completion of the process.
Meanwhile, a Driver Orientation portion handles tasks related to orientation, including determining eligibility for enrollment, scheduling sessions via the web, producing all orientation paperwork electronically, streaming all necessary videos, storing and maintaining driver files online, and notifying management upon completion of the process.
While the communication process was previously a mess, Crawford says, Tenstreet's tool makes it easier. Communication with drivers will become even more important with the new safety measurement system, as more stress will be placed on driver scores. Drivers need to understand how to minimize any hits they may take in the Driver Safety Measurement System, he adds.

Tenstreet automates driver safety management - FleetOwner 11/23/2009
A new offering from Tenstreet will automate the driver management process, including the ability for carriers to prepare for the upcoming CSA2010 program.
The Tenstreet Communication Engine improves communication and compliance at all levels, the company said, while offering flat-rate pricing. The program offers accident response, which automatically enrolls drivers in a specific online safety course based on the type of accident that occurred, schedules and notifies drivers of training courses and dates, tracks the driver’s progress and tests the driver upon completion while producing a DOT-compliant accident registry.
The Engine also provides monthly safety training through web-based video and phone-based training while tracking and testing drivers if desired and updating driver files. In addition, driver orientation determines eligibility for enrollment, schedules sessions, produces all necessary paperwork and maintains driver files. Real-time monitoring is also an option.
"These scenarios are just a small sampling of the services and solutions we now offer the trucking industry," said Craig Johnson, CEO. "We can provide training content or use the trucking company’s content, or a mixture of the two, to meet the specific requirements of virtually any trucking industry need in the area of human resource management."

Melandy Ward, in charge of the new driver "help desk" at Tango Transport, has used Tenstreet Xtend over the last year and a half to help rebuild her company's driver culture. So far, turnover has plunged from 139% to 87% since Tango began using the program to help improve management of its 700 company drivers as well as the owner-operators working for the carrier as well.
"It helps us validate the importance of the driver in our company," she told me. "We're not dealing in gray anymore when it comes to their issues – the system helps us find solutions to their problems and find them faster. I run a report on driver issues every week and share them with our executives, allowing us to take the temperature of the fleet any number of ways – by division (flatbed, OTR), by driver seniority, etc. – to see how we are doing."
Tenstreet is but an example of some of the simple but brilliant ways technology is being applied to trucking to help this industry get the information necessary for keeping the dreams of driving a truck for a living alive and healthy, to the benefit of all concerned – especially those with their hands on the wheel and gearshift.

Reams of paper also can be removed from the driver hiring and manage process. Ron Thomas with Eagle Transport Corp said during a recent press conference that his company cut driver hiring paperwork by 75% when it switched to an electronic application system. The press conference was sponsored by Tenstreet LLC, a developer of software for driver recruiting and retention.
In addition to eliminating paper, the online system used by Eagle Transport moves applicants through the hiring process faster and more efficiently. Managers can make better, quicker, and more accurate decisions. Little time is wasted identifying the best driver candidates and getting them into a truck.
